Here are the results for the 2008 Alties. Thanks for voting, everyone.
Most Friendly Developer
EPIC: Full support in Gears 2, Customization in UT3 - 59.38% of the vote
Runner-up: Treyarch
Really, both devs deserve props for including alternate controls in two games each this year. Though I think the option for full customization in UT3 helped EPIC take the prize for this one.
Moment of the Year
Tie: Commandeering the Brumak in Gears 2, facing your first banzai charge in COD: WaW - 41.38% each
Last Place: Leviathan battle (Resistance 2)
Both great moments in gaming this year, though I’m surprised the Leviathan battle in Resistance 2 didn’t get more votes. Less PS3 owners hanging around here compared to 360 people, perhaps?
The Piece of Crap Award
Turning Point - 39.39% of the vote
Runner-up: Haze
Third Place: Tomb Raider Underworld
Fourth Place: Mercenaries 2
A favorite category of mine - I like the title. And yes, Turning Point wasn’t very good, was it? I thought Mercs 2 would have taken the cake, though. Big STINKER in my opinion. Sorry Pandemic…
Best PS3 Game
Metal Gear Solid 4 - 62.07% of the vote
Runner-up: Resistance 2
Third Place: BioShock
I haven’t played MGS4, so I can’t really comment on it - but our PS3 guys have spoken. I must say that Resistance 2 looks incredible, though. But perhaps nothing can really compete against a Kojima game?
Best 360 Game
Gears of War 2 - 53.57% of the vote
Runner-up: Call of Duty: World at War
Third Place: Unreal Tournament 3
Gears of War 2 is an amazing follow-up game to one of my favorites. I’m currently working on my second play through, and it’s a lot of fun, as you all know (hence the number of votes it received). But for reasons explained in the next category, COD: WaW ever so slightly edges out as my pick…
Best Game Overall
Call of Duty: World at War (Playstion 3, Xbox 360) - 37% of the vote
Agreed. True, it was basically COD4 in a WWII setting, but for me, World at War delivered an extremely fun time. I thought for sure that Gears of War 2 would have been my pick for this year, but COD: World at War earned my vote (largely due to the worm level, some uneven graphics, and too much time underground in Gears 2). Though it still rocked, overall.
Left 4 Dead was the runner-up (sorry, SAKY) earning 20% of the vote, followed by Gears of War 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3 and Resistance 2.
Anyway, that’s it for the Alties, until next year. Thanks again to everyone for sharing your opinions with us. And remember, no yapping at me if your picks didn’t win… these were all community decisions, after all.

January 12th, 2009 at 9:54 ami’ll give EPIC UT3, but as far as GOW go, including Legacy is just a painful tease. you can’t properly perform certain important functions due to the lack of button customization, which is not FULL support.

January 12th, 2009 at 10:10 amI’m used to Legacy in Gears at this point. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than not having it.
And by FULL support, we mean the game includes all four standard stick layouts, it doesn’t refer to customization. Which is why I said “Full Support in Gears 2, Customization in UT3.”

Readers like yourself are why we are all here, contacting developers and informing our fellow gamers. The encompassing phrase is here that there is no one soulution for every person’s problems. What you are describing is the types of issues that plauge FPS genre on consoles. I can totally understand your frustration and share your distain for the situation at hand.

I thought for sure someone would have asked why Far Cry 2 wasn’t mentioned as a Best Game Overall nominee - and you want it in The Piece of Crap category…
I think it’s overrated, personally. Aside from the graphics, I wasn’t impressed much by it.
