2009 So Far

We’re a few months into 2009 and we’ve had some highs and lows. Here’s how things have gone down:

  • Southpaw & Scout/Legacy were both added in Socom: Confrontation via the 1.30 patch
  • Armored Core: For Answer sports full customization
  • F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin offered Southpaw, no Legacy
  • Killzone 2 also delivered Southpaw; Legacy was left out
  • Southpaw was available in 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand… but Fiddy must not be a Legacy player…
  • The Riddick Demo offered the four standard stick layouts (and the retail version is due in April)
  • The demo for Wanted: Weapons of Fate only offered Default (the retail version is available now, and in all likelihood does not offer additional options)
  • Resident Evil 5 shipped with the same control options found in the demo, as expected (4 layouts, no Southpaw or Legacy)
  • ShellShock 2: Blood Trails had Southpaw, but Legacy was MIA

Other games on the horizon to be released in April include:

Plus I’m still trying to get a hold of Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, which was released back in February.

So overall, the year is going fairly well for Southpaw players, but it’s not the greatest start for Legacy folks. However, with Halo 3: ODST and Modern Warfare 2 on the way this year, we at least have two blockbuster titles to look forward to that will likely offer the four standard stick layouts and should therefore be (fairly) comfortable for everyone here.

Has anyone else even heard of this game?

I recently gave it a spin and can confirm that Southpaw is available, along with three button layouts and Y-Axis Inversion. Legacy controls were no where to be found, and while in Southpaw, firing remains mapped to the Right Trigger.

The game was released in February for the 360, PS3 and PC. For my full review, have a look here.

Enjoy your weekend!

Resident Evil 5 Controls: We’ve Got You Covered

Some of you have been asking about the available control options in Resident Evil 5, which as you all know, was released yesterday.

The game offers four different control schemes, but regrettably, none are proper Southpaw or Legacy configurations. A couple months back, SAKY managed to check out the demo that was only supposed to be available in Japan. You can read about how he pulled that off here, and he’s also done a pretty nice job of detailing how the various control options work, complete with screenshots.

Sometimes when we have already covered a demo, we might not necessarily post on the game again once it hits retail shelves. This is because demos normally reflect the final control options.

If you’re waiting for a post on a recently released game, you can always refer to our Xbox 360 and PS3 Control Lists. Chances are, we’ll have the information you need courtesy of previously released demos. And occasionally, I will have these pages updated with information on new games before any of us have a chance to put a more detailed post together.

Anyway, I picked up Resident Evil 5 last night (managed to score the last copy) so I’ll update this post at some point over the weekend with my thoughts on how the controls feel from a Legacy player’s perspective.*

Have a good weekend, everyone!

*Update: Legacy players should find movement comfortable, but aiming may be difficult for some. I think this game would be a lot more fun if the controls weren’t as clumsy.

Update # 2: Mitch822cc finds Type A to be comfortable as a Legacy player (Legacy movement, Southpaw aiming).

Another Quickie - Wanted: Weapons of Fate Demo

In case anyone has been wondering about the controls offered by this recently released demo, there are no alternate configurations available. The retail version is slated for release on March 24th for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. And with the release date looming ever so closely, you can bet that the demo reflects the final controls.

Thanks to Squiffy for the information.

QUICKIE - CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ASSAULT ON DARK ATHENA

riddick.jpgJust poked my head out of the hole to take a quick look at the control options for the the new Chronicles of Riddick game, due out for XBOX 360, PS3, and PC. As is always the case some good and bad news here. First the good you say? Well, the game supports all four stick layouts as you’ll find in the below screen shots.

As for the bad, there seems to be no button customization. Don’t worry though, developers know whats best for us. Right? RIGHT?! Damn right they do! I’m mean sure, I don’t like that lefty-orientated schemes swap trigger functions but I digress.

The PC and XBOX versions appear to be releasing April 7 in North America with the PS3 version to follow May 7th. Feel free to check out the demo on XBOX LIVE.

Infinity Ward’s Community Manager Invites COD:MW2 Suggestions

Infinty Ward’s Community Manager, Robert Bowling, is inviting palyers at provide suggestions for their next foray in to the Call of Duty franchise….via Twitter. So now seems like another great chance to let a developer know what you would like to see in the way of controls. You will have to sign up for twitter account in order to make a suggestion but that seems like a fair trade to me.

Fiddy’s Got Southpaw

fiddy.jpg

For anyone who may have been wondering about the control options in 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, Southpaw is available, but not Legacy. There are also four button layouts to pick from; two for Default, and two for Southpaw.

Mclovin sent the confirmation earlier, so I can’t offer much more information than that, though he did mention that it’s actually a pretty decent Gears clone game. Not that being better than the first Fiddy game is a crowning achievement or anything…

So for Southpaw players that wanted to give this game a shot, you’re all set. Legacy guys will have to stick with Gears of War 2 for their third person shooter fix, however.
