Welcome to the first edition of ‘2Three Recommends.’ Every now and again I’m going to post a recommendation for a great game that is alt-control friendly.
My first recommendation is TimeShift, available for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Published by Sierra, this game was released in October and was pretty well swept under the rug with so many highly publicized games coming out in 2007.
TimeShift, in a nutshell, is an FPS game that takes place in an alternate reality. You play as a nameless hero with a neat outfit that gives him an entire arsenal of TimeShifting abilities, including slowing down, stopping, and rewinding time.
Is this revolutionary? No. Games have offered such abilities for a long time now. But TimeShift does it really well, and it sure looks pretty on an HD TV. The graphics and textures are just beautiful, and you’ll often find yourself staring at the sky, water, and even the ground because it really looks that nice in some areas.
There are a variety of puzzles that need to be solved via your time abilities as well. These can get tedious after a while, but you’ll soon forget about that when you’re blowing away legions of enemy soldiers in slow-mo. It’s also pretty satisfying to stop time and steal your foe’s weapon to use it against him. The final boss battle is epic… you take on an enormous sentinel that seems like a cross between a Scarab Tank from Halo and those creepy walking death machines from War of the Worlds. It’s very rewarding to take it down.
In the end, TimeShift probably can’t compete against the big guys like Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3. But it’s definitely one worth checking out for the alt-control players out there looking for another fun shooter. With both Southpaw and Legacy available, you’ll find yourself right at home very quickly. And any games that splatter blood all over the screen in HD are ok my book.
