Best Controls?
There, now that I have your attention, I’m curious which game (or series) you folks think offer the best controls, out of first and third person shooters of course.
I decided against holding a poll for a couple reasons. The first being that I don’t feel like setting another one up. How’s that for honest writing?
And second, with this question the answers from each of us could vary so much that it would be really easy for me to leave out someone’s choice in a voting situation.
For me, no game’s controls could compare to GoldenEye for years. But nowadays, I find the controls in the Call of Duty series to be the most comfortable. Other games tend to feel pretty clumsy in my opinion compared to it, with the exception of Halo.
So what gets your pick? It can be from this gen, last-gen… whatever.

February 18th, 2009 at 2:54 pmHalo CE (1) revolutionized 1st person console shooters and brought me back into non-sports gaming. Legacy and their other innovative options did it for me. Bungie is hands down one of the best when it comes to controls.

February 18th, 2009 at 4:48 pmNo dout GoldenEye,Halo and Call of Duty Modern Warfare. GoldenEye because it was THE first big shooter for console, Halo cause it bring the level of the shooter game on console closer to those on pc and Call of Duty ModernWafare for inoving with the perk system.

February 19th, 2009 at 12:26 amHalo hands down, COD4 & 5 are good but much prefer aiming in by clicking down the right thumbstick. Timesplitters 3 is up there with Halo, but just misses out in the fact that when you aim in, you are forced to aim completely with the left thumbstick, well with legacy scheme anyway.

February 19th, 2009 at 2:16 amFor me this would be Resistance I & II, as you had the option to remap every button.

February 19th, 2009 at 5:50 amTimesplitters allowed full button customisation and all 4 stick layouts. You could also change the stick layout when you held down the aim button. If we’re talking about default layouts then Halo3 gets a mention. ‘ Green thumb’ is an excellent layout. Melee on the right stick and reload on LB/RB is perfect.

February 19th, 2009 at 7:16 amCOD 4 IMHO is a really comfy feet to it (legacy), nice and ergonomic, and more important, when you go to other games its made them feel ‘not quite right’, the buttons all feel right and well placed.

February 19th, 2009 at 8:52 amIt’s a tie for me, between Halo and CoD 4 & 5. Both are very comfortable in Legacy, except COD when I lay down. Its nearly impossible to aim down the sights while laying down in legacy

February 19th, 2009 at 12:56 pmNot many major surprises here with GoldenEye, COD and Halo being common choices.
Resistance… now that was a little unexpected!

February 19th, 2009 at 10:22 pmHalo 3 specifically because it introduced Bumper Jumper….the most amazing addition to Legacy controls I’ve ever used. Now I can jump strafe for the first time comfortably. Also it is much easier to pilot the Banshee using LB to roll instead of A. An awesome combination with Legacy controls!

February 20th, 2009 at 3:37 amHALO CE is the moment it all clicked into place and felt so right, there had been others before it (Goldeneye, TUROK and QUAKE II on the N64). But it’s HALO for me, COD 4 hits the nail on the head as well and UNREAL III with it’s fully customizeable controls comes close, but I’m a HALO fan at heart and the BUMPER JUMPER setting on H3 is as close to control nirvana you will get in a FPS.

February 20th, 2009 at 8:54 amhalo 3 and left4dead have been particularly suited for me. I’m not a long time console gamer (started with shooters on pc), but halo 3 has always fit like a glove.

Yes, I know the controller didn’t have 2 joysticks but it allowed you to map ANY function to anything, I mean ANYTHING! If you for some reason wanted to shoot when you hit the joystick right, and jump when you hit it left, you could map it! It is the only console game I know of that has ever offered that much depth of button mapping.
I usually would play with a legacy control scheme but sometimes I like to play it with the joystick as analog movement and the mouse as aiming, it’s awesome! -

February 24th, 2009 at 6:58 amMix of cod4 and halo. x = reload, a = jump, b = melee, right stick = toggle crouch is my favourite setup, no inversion. I had to stop playing FFXII because forced inversion was ruining my play time with other games which didn’t have inversion.
