Bourne Conspires Against Us

Well, that may be a little dramatic, but The Bourne Conspiracy does not offer any support for Southpaw or Legacy controls.
However, you’ll find that the default presets are actually fairly comfortable for navigation, combat and driving… but when it comes to shooting, it’s not so good. This game offers the now standard over the shoulder/FPS-style aiming as seen in Gears of War, and pretty well every third person shooter these days. So I definitely missed my Legacy controls during the firefights.
Perhaps an auto-aim function would have been more practical for the shooting segments, similar to what’s offered in GTA 4 since there are four separate button layouts for navigation, combat, driving and shooting. Obviously, alt-controls would be awkward for the non-shooting parts.
There are some bright spots though. The graphics are pretty polished, as the game makes use of Epic’s Unreal Engine. Also, the combat sections are fairly interesting. The fist fights offer some unique game play that is somewhat reminiscent of Mortal Kombat, as you need to rely heavily on button combinations to link attacks together. Often, you’ll be prompted to tap a button to pull off a neat takedown move or an acrobatic dodge, as seen in the films. It’s pretty cool to watch, but the trouble is, you feel more like a spectator in this game most of the time as a result. Although, the music borrowed from the films and some of the fight sequences really make this game seem like an authentic Bourne experience.

Essentially, this game does a good job of capturing the feel of the series, so if you’re a fan, you might not mind struggling through the shooting parts without your alt-controls, as in my opinion, they are not really needed during the non-shooting segments.
Since this game is lacking in alt-controls, it’s pretty difficult for me to whole heartedly recommend it. But if you’re interested, I would say give it a shot and see how you do. If you’re like me though, you’ll be cursing while you’re trying to aim.

June 16th, 2008 at 2:30 amI’ve read your review on the Bourne Conspiracy and I couldn’t disagree with you more, I’ve got a US account on my XBOX so i managed to download the demo a few weeks before we got offically and I can quite happily say that the game is the biggest pile of horse shit I’ve ever played. The combat was boring and unispired, reading the developer interviews saying they had captured the feel of the bourne combat. BOLLOCKS, not once could I pick up a near by item and use it it was hand to hand two buttons then a take down, and the take downs are scripted and you can only watch not take part. The QTE (Quick Time Events) pop up so fast they should be called SUPER QTE. The graphics are functional but not really up to what next gen quality.
Then there’s the driving section, That mini cornered like it was stuck to the roadand you spen half the level driving around in a circle until marie tells you to try the tunnel now it might be clear, well I’m sorry I don’t want a game that stops me from playing because it can’t be bothered to create a half decent map to drive round. As for the shooting section, well I didn’t get this far my lower intestine threatened to climb up my spine and choke my brain if I didn’t stp playing and delete from my hard straight away, as I’m still here you can guess what I chose to do.

June 16th, 2008 at 5:52 amIf you downloaded the demo a few weeks ago, why didn’t you pass along the control information for everyone?
I enjoyed the combat actually. I would have liked to feel a bit more involved rather than just pushing buttons when prompted to pull off the big take downs as I said in the review, but I had some fun with it. It’s far from the worst game in this generation of consoles, in my opinion. I also thought that the graphics were really nice. They looked pretty sharp in HD.
Sounds like you didn’t really give it much a chance if you’ve just played the demo and didn’t try the shooting. Having played the full version, I would say that it’s not going to be a classic because of some of the points mentioned in the review (that is: you feel like a spectator more than a gamer). Plus the controls are far from perfect, which is the main reason why I said I can’t whole heartedly recommend it.
