Bummed Out About the Battlefield Beta?

bf.jpg

It’s no secret at this point - The Beta for DICE’s upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company does not support alternate control schemes (no Southpaw or Legacy). I have to admit that I’m not surprised at all. Not that I’m trying to throw salt on the wound by any means, nor am I trying to say “I told you so.” However, based on the available controls in Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for the Xbox 360, this game (at least the Beta) has exactly what I expected for controls. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat sold incredibly well. In fact, it’s a Platinum Hit if I remember correctly.

And the fact of the matter is that many games still sell in spite of their omission of alternate or customizable controls. So here we have an example of a game that did just fine by leaving us all out in the cold, and of course the follow-up game offers the same control styles. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke… right?

If this doesn’t illustrate to you, my fellow alt-control players, that we really are the minority in the gaming industry, then nothing will. So, what can you do now as a consumer? You just want to play games that you’re looking forward to, just like everyone one else, right? You don’t mean the gaming industry or development companies harm, do you? No, of course not. That’s not what this community is all about.

So while the Beta is out already, I still encourage all of you to contact DICE and have your say. Don’t yell and scream. Don’t swear at them. Voice your concerns as their consumer logically, and professionally.

I know a lot of you are disappointed about this one. To a certain extent, I am too. But these days, I try not to get too excited about games if I’m not sure on whether alt-controls will be present or not. If the game is by a developer that is continually alt-friendly, like Bungie, Ubi, Infinity, etc. then ok… it’s safe to get excited and you know they won’t forget about us based on their history. Something like Battlefield, or other unknown games… well, if you get too excited, you might just be in for a letdown.

While it may be too late for Bad Company, if DICE hears your voice this time around, maybe the next Battlefield game might just be more accessible. You never know, they may even surprise us with a patch or implement changes before the final version is released in stores.

anyone have a forum post for this? I’d like us all to jump on EA’s ass. We got Ubisoft to change their ways after GRAW 1, why not EA?

There is one open already here.

However, I’m having some difficulties signing up. Maybe you guys will have better luck…

I left a reply on their website regarding Legacy controls as well. Signing up was a pain though. First I hit “reply” on the last post in the thread. Then on the new screen, I selected “create new account”. Once you do that go into the options of your new account and create a new “EA Class screen name” persona. Then select it. Now you should be able to post. Good luck.

Thanks Punchy. I had better luck today and was able to post.

I hope other people will do the same… I would love to see the mighty EA change their ways as UbiSoft did.

I think our members should be wary of this game. It seems EA have not gotten over thier mini-transaction phase, for when the game releases not all weapons will be available and you will have to have to purchase them via marketplace to use them in game.

Smells like a rip off, Micro$oft should be putting a stop to this, DLC is to further enhance a game and give a longer life, NOT to rip off the customer with incomplete games going to retail.

Although I will not be buying this game on these grounds I will lend my voice and support to getting SP, L and SPL included for other gamers.

    @ Squiffy

I actually was not aware of that. It’s unbelievable! Hopefully it will blow up in their face, as gamers should never have to pay extra to unlock additional features after they’ve purchased a game.

Hopefully gamers will boycott this, as if it goes well for EA, we know it will become a trend that will continue and one that other companies will emulate…
