Review: Quantum of Solace

Now I would imagine that a number of you are putting this one on hold for the time being, or possibly skipping it altogether in favor of your Gears 2, COD: World at War, Left 4 Dead, Mirror’s Edge, Resistance 2, etc.

But, if you are a fan of GoldenEye 007 for the N64 and the COD series, you really need to play this game. I’ll be as bold to say that it is the best Bond game since Rare’s N64 masterpiece. I did enjoy Everything or Nothing and From Russia with Love, but those were third person games of course. Quantum of Solace is without question the best FPS Bond experience we’ve had in over a decade.

Treyarch has outdone themselves with this title, and hopefully it will help their company earn back some of the respect they lost from the FPS crowd after COD3. Now, I’ve said before that I did enjoy COD3, but I definitely preferred 2 and 4 by Infinity Ward. I think though, that gamers were perhaps a tad harsh on Treyarch for their work on COD3. But make no mistake, they have put together an excellent game in Quantum of Solace. Read the rest…

Playing Through the Call of Duty 4 Campaign

all-ghillied-up.jpg

Yes, we’ve covered this game before. Yes, you know it’s an alt-control friendly game. And of course, we’ve all been playing this title for a while now. But much to my surprise, many gamers that I’ve talked to haven’t played through the single-player campaign. I guess everyone has gotten too hooked on playing multiplayer online. And I suppose that I’m an old school gamer, because to me, there’s nothing better than playing through an intense single-player campaign. I know most of you prefer online play, and that’s cool, but you definitely owe it to yourself to check out single-player if you own the game - and I know you do! Read the rest…

The Darkness by Starbreeze

We are talking about the game here of course, not the band. The Darkness is yet another example of a great title that was overlooked by many gamers. It came out this past summer, but I’m going to guess that too many people were awaiting the release of BioShock to pay attention to this one. But since BioShock is not an alt-control friendly game, and The Darkness is (Southpaw and Legacy are available, of course), we here at Alt-Controls.com are going to give it the recognition it deserves. TimeShift By Sierra

tsbox1.jpgWelcome to the first edition of ‘2Three Recommends.’ Every now and again I’m going to post a recommendation for a great game that is alt-control friendly.

My first recommendation is TimeShift, available for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Published by Sierra, this game was released in October and was pretty well swept under the rug with so many highly publicized games coming out in 2007.

TimeShift, in a nutshell, is an FPS game that takes place in an alternate reality. You play as a nameless hero with a neat outfit that gives him an entire arsenal of TimeShifting abilities, including slowing down, stopping, and rewinding time.

Is this revolutionary? No. Games have offered such abilities for a long time now. But TimeShift does it really well, and it sure looks pretty on an HD TV. The graphics and textures are just beautiful, and you’ll often find yourself staring at the sky, water, and even the ground because it really looks that nice in some areas.

There are a variety of puzzles that need to be solved via your time abilities as well. These can get tedious after a while, but you’ll soon forget about that when you’re blowing away legions of enemy soldiers in slow-mo. It’s also pretty satisfying to stop time and steal your foe’s weapon to use it against him. The final boss battle is epic… you take on an enormous sentinel that seems like a cross between a Scarab Tank from Halo and those creepy walking death machines from War of the Worlds. It’s very rewarding to take it down.

In the end, TimeShift probably can’t compete against the big guys like Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3. But it’s definitely one worth checking out for the alt-control players out there looking for another fun shooter. With both Southpaw and Legacy available, you’ll find yourself right at home very quickly. And any games that splatter blood all over the screen in HD are ok my book.
