As I suspected, Dead Space, the zero-gravity shooter from EA does not support alternate controls or any customizable options, aside from axis inversion. This should not come as a major surprise considering that EA has historically omitted alternative controls from their games.
Thanks go out to a couple of our readers for throwing the confirmation our way. And sorry to those that were looking forward to this one.
On the positive side, a number of games will be available soon that should support alternate controls including Gears of War 2, Quantum of Solace, and we have already confirmed that COD: World at War delivers the goods.
Southpaws can play the recently released Fracture in the meantime, and Legacy players… well… what can I say, you’re used to having nothing to play. But you can always check out my Legacy game suggestions until something new comes our way.

October 18th, 2008 at 11:07 pmFellow Southpaws,
I normally refuse to buy games without southpaw control options. I upgraded my PC over the Bioshock debacle. Having said that, I decided to rent Dead Space despite knowing their are no alt controls. Now I own it! This is an amazing game. The combat is not fast paced like your standard FPS, so having to aim with the right stick is not nearly as hard as I feared. Enemies give you time time to react and aim to compensate for the awkwardness of using the right stick to aim. Give the game a rent to see if you can work the controls. If you can, you’ll enjoy one of the best experiences in gaming in many years.

October 25th, 2008 at 5:44 amI agree Conor. Rented it yesterday and blasted through about a third of the story on normal. Lots of Doom 3 (with less obviously triggered enemies, although still a fair few) a fair bit of Resi 4 ,and a dash of Bioshock. No complaints there. Line gun and plasma cutter make it relatively easy to blast the slower mutants, and imperfect controls sort of add to the sense of tension.
Will only play through once as harder difficulties and experimentation with tactics would be beyond me with right stick aiming.
Anyone with a thumstick modded controller will find that the control setup is better suited to playing southpaw. No jump or crouch, and alt fire options mapped to the ABXY buttons.

February 10th, 2009 at 9:20 pmRented it, found it IMPOSSIBLE to play. Very frustrating. Why is it so hard to include this option? They’re only hurting themselves because people won’t buy the game if they can’t even play
