Far Cry 2: Fall 2008

The sequel to the highly successful first person shooter, Far Cry, is heading our way this Fall for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
However, Crytek, the developers of the first installment, are not involved with the production of Far Cry 2. Instead, UbiSoft Montreal will be handling the development duties this time around. And apparently Jack Carver, the protagonist from the first game, will also be MIA. Oh well. Did any one know that was actually his name? Or do you just call him “The Far Cry Guy” like I do? Not really a memorable character, so I don’t see his exit having any major impact on this game at all. He’s no Master Chief.
Personally, I was not a huge fan of Far Cry Instincts: Predator for the Xbox 360. This game of course offered graphically enhanced versions of both Far Cry Instincts, and Far Cry Instincts: Evolution for the original Xbox. The game was not terrible at all by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly was not what FPS gamers expect from a next-gen machine. And when compared to some of the class-A games available on the 360, Far Cry Instincts: Predator (a last- gen game with a glossy makeover) didn’t quite measure up.
But, despite not being a fan of the previous Far Cry title on the 360, I’m actually fairly excited about the latest installment that’s on the way. The Far Cry series has always been fairly well respected… it’s just aged. So I think that a new version of Far Cry built from the ground up on the next-gen platforms has the potential to be a solid title.
The game play will break away from the typical shooter mould and will be very different from what FPS fans have come to expect. The maps are going to be open and non-linear, without any set levels. In other words, you’re going to be able to go where you want and do what you please. Should be a fun experience and will give FPS fans something that is a little different from your typical “generic shooter” that we have been provided with lately in abundance, and then some.
Since this is a UbiSoft game, it’s fairly safe for us to expect full support for Southpaw, Legacy & Sp. Legacy. And Legacy players will recall that in Far Instincts: Predator, their control setting of choice was referred to as “Goofy.” Well, in spite of what the game developers may have thought of the Legacy setting, at least they decided to include that control option for those who needed it. I’m wondering if it will be called Goofy again in Far Cry 2? And as always, you can expect our full report on the available controls, along with our two cents on the game in general when it is released this Fall.

April 9th, 2008 at 8:19 am@ Mclovin. I hear you man. I’m pretty sure it will have ‘Goofy’ since it’s a UbiSoft game. They always offer alt-controls in shooters. But we’ll still check it out for everyone just to make sure, especially after what happened with Frontlines.

April 10th, 2008 at 8:51 amHey There-
This isn’t a Far Cry Question, but thought I’d ask it.
Have you guys been able to post on the BF:BC EA forums? Whenever I try, I get redirect errors.

Check our posting “Bummed Out About the Battlefield Beta?” and there is a link to a thread on the EA forums (in the comments) for No Southpaw, and I also threw in my two cents on Legacy being omitted.
However, that forum has the worst navigation I’ve ever seen and is indeed difficult to sign up for. It took me a few tries and some still haven’t been able to join…
