Gears of War: Roadie Running with Legacy

There’s no question that Gears of War is one of the premiere titles on the Xbox 360, and it’s one of the few third person shooters out there that offers both Southpaw and Legacy. However, many Legacy players find roadie running very difficult. Pretty well anyone that I’ve talked to who has tried Legacy in Gears has run into this problem. A quick Google search on the topic will bring up a number of forum postings on the issue as well. All of us Legacy players have been there. We turn on Gears with anticipation and see the good news that we get to switch to Legacy. Done. We start moving around, practice aiming, and everything feels great. So we rev up our chainsaw bayonet and we’re ready to start taking out the Locust Horde!

But wait! You try to roadie run. Doesn’t work out very well does it? Why? Well, we’re using Legacy, so of course strafing is mapped to the right thumb stick. But we have to hold down the ‘A’ button to roadie run, so we can’t very well use our right thumb to maneuver our character. Then you discover that the left thumb stick does nothing while you roadie run. So all we can do is run in a straight line! Not good.

roadie-running-with-legacy.jpgSo should we give up on Gears? Well, I have a quick fix to get you back in the game. When roadie running while using Legacy, simply shift your left thumb to the right stick so you can strafe (or steer your character) while holding down ‘A’ with your right thumb (see the photo to the left). It sounds awkward, I know. But it’s actually not at all. You’ll find after doing this method a couple times, you will instinctively shift your left thumb over to the right stick the instant you start to roadie run. Now you have full movement capabilities. Which is good, because running in straight line only will just get you killed. Fast. So for any Legacy players out there that missed out on Gears because of this problem (and I know there are a number of you), go back and try this trick out. Gears is a must-play for any 360 owner, and the inevitable sequel will be as well. Hopefully this will be helpful for my fellow Legacy players out there and get you back in the game if the roadie running issue kept you away.

looks like you are playing standard legacy instead of southpaw legacy, which would probably serve you better AND is more like playing Goldeneye/PD in the N64 days (N64 analog = Left stick on PS3/360)

You would be correct. Southpaw Legacy doesn’t feel right for me though. On my 360 controller, I prefer forward movement mapped to the left stick, while using the right stick for strafing.

Although trying Southpaw Legacy may be another good option for some. ;)

I would always hold down A with my right thumb and steer the right stick by overlapping my thumb with my right pointer finger. It got more than a few laughs when people would see me doing it, but it worked ok. Here’s hoping that GOW2 fixes this issue!

That sounds even more awkward than what I do…. ;)

Hopefully Gears 2 addresses this problem.
