Good News Has Come! Gears of War 2

Alternate Control Schemes Offered: Southpaw, Legacy, Legacy-Southpaw
Alternate Button Combinations: Ability to swap aim/shoot triggers, Ability to invert the X and Y axis.
New option since Gears 1: Ability to separate the roadie run to the X button (the “use” button is then pushed over to Y and combined with “point of interest”)
Well the obvious good news is that all 4 of the stick configurations are indeed offered in Gears of War 2! Also lefties are not forced to switch the trigger to the left side (as some past titles have made the mistake of doing).
Where I get confused though is, why oh why, didn’t they make that alternate roadie run button a shoulder button instead of X. The X button doesn’t really fix much as far as I can see. (This would have saved people from the issue I’m about to bring up.) And with no further delay…
Note to Legacy/Southpaw users: Now when using the chainsaw, you still keep the standard legacy configuration when the chainsaw is revved up. Awesome! (Basically you can aim left and right with your left stick like normal.) The incredible omission here is that Epic DIDN’T do the same with the roadie run. Basically we are stuck still switching over to the right stick to navigate while in a roadie run. Ugh!
Overall, Gears of War 2 is about as much as we could ask for from a alt-control friendly game. Add in custom button mapping and we would have had perfection here. I can’t wait for Friday!

This game is going to keep me occupied for a while.

November 5th, 2008 at 2:23 pmGood news regarding the same control options as GOW1. I have been a legacy user since playing console FPS’s on a control pad (playstion 1, so it’s been a while). But after playing the Mirrors Edge demo and being really interested in Dead Space I took the decision to attempt to switch to default control set-up, in order that I could enjoy the games mentioned, and others.
Also based on the fact that, as reported on this site, fewer and fewer games are offering the legacy option. I also would like to enjoy playing the many marketplace demo’s available without the frustration of not being able to control the action in the default settings.
I have been using default to play H3, COD5 over the last week or so and I am slowly starting to play without noticing the control issues. I have also left the inverted Y-axis ON which has helped a lot. So hopefully many years of playing legacy are undoing. It will take a while before I am playing like my level 45 (H3) again!! But hopefully not TOO long.
Keep up the fight!
It would be good to here has anyone else made the switch (legacy to default) and never looked back?

November 6th, 2008 at 9:23 amWhy would you post this on our site?
Our cause is to keep alt-controls going. All the efforts we make to get noticed by developers like DICE - them reading a comment like this certainly won’t help the thousands of alt-control players out there that are struggling to make their voices heard.
I tried to change to default controls about a year ago - they’re SHIT in my opinion and I don’t have to change. You want to change, fine, but don’t post that crap here - you’re only reiterating to developers that it’s up to GAMERS to change - when THEY are the ones that need to change and adapt to suit the needs of their paying customers.

November 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pmYouv’e got me all wrong! There will always be a need for a site like this, while there are left handed people in this world, developers should include them when designing the control scheme (ie. southpaw). But I am not left handed and way back those to use to legacy controls( Why, who knows). But what are legacy controls? They are a carry over from playing FPS’s on keyboard only. So I can understand why developers might see legacy controls as not relevant today.
Goodbye, godbless and farewell!

November 6th, 2008 at 4:47 pmThis site is for left handers, legacy players, right handers who use southpaw, and anyone or everyone who requires customizable controls for any reason - not just lefties.
Legacy is a carry-over from GoldenEye 007 controls, using the one analog stick for movement/turning and the c-buttons for strafing. Considering many people started playing console FPS games with this control style and have used it for years - it’s still applicable for today’s games.
If anything, Default controls are more like using the arrow keys on a PC. Not sure why you think PC controls are similar to Legacy, because they aren’t.
The numerous Legacy players here show that it is indeed still a very relevant control style. I don’t think you can say it’s not when you’re unsure yourself exactly what it is and where it’s origins lie.

November 7th, 2008 at 10:33 amYes, legacy definitely did not come from PC controls. It came from Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Thank you 2Three for clearing this up!

November 7th, 2008 at 11:25 pmNo way legacy came from pc. Default thumbstick controls came from pc, where the left thumbstick is WASD on keyboard and right thumbstick is mouse.
Also legacy didn’t just come from Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, it came from the fact that the Nintendo 64 controller only had one thumbstick therefore legacy was the most intelligent scheme at the time. -

November 16th, 2008 at 6:35 amSorry I’m late to the party.
Actually I believe Legacy was derived from the PC a little but mostly from game consoles. Back with the original Doom, you could use the mouse for turning left to right as well as moving forward and reverse. Not that fun to use as you would have to lift up and replace the mouse every two seconds, but on the upside, you had analog walking… As far as the console goes, I agree that it was a very logical setup for singular movement pad controllers. I was playing Doom on my 32x and Quake on my Saturn well before Goldeneye on the N64 and they used a move-turn combo for the d-pad by default. Just putting my observations in.Oh, and yes, I still own a 32x (and Sega CD too), and no, I don’t regret it.

November 16th, 2008 at 10:02 amAh, but you use your right hand to move the mouse as you described. Legacy makes you use your left hand to move forward and turn. Modern console shooters using analog sticks refer to the system as Legacy because in technology, anything called “Legacy” is basically “the old way”… the “old way” to control console shooters with an analog stick is rooted in… GoldenEye.
This party is now over.

November 17th, 2008 at 11:47 ami picked up GOW2 yesterday. you said that chainsaw in Legacy would keep the left-stick in Legacy mode, but i tried it yesterday and it didn’t do that :-\ now, i wasn’t connected to XBL…does anyone recall an update before playing the game?

November 17th, 2008 at 12:43 pm@ teej - That’s unfortunate that you had difficulty with the chainsaw in legacy.
Sounds like the Legacy config. is pretty well identical to the one in the first - present, but somewhat problematic. At least it’s available though…
