Half Life 3: 2010

hl3.jpg

Fans of this hallmark FPS series and The Orange Box can rejoice, as Half Life 3 is on the way.

I still haven’t gotten around to trying any of the Half Life games or The Orange Box, so my response to this news is fairly neutral. Although I would imagine that we have a few fans lurking around here that are fairly excited about this.

However, the screen shot is fairly impressive and I can see the crow bar leading to some good times. ;)

Thats awesome! I only just played the orange box. A bit outdated now but still very enjoyable, especially episode 2!

That was the thing for me as well … I thought the Half Life games appeared dated.

Now with so many shooters coming out soon I don’t think I’ll ever get around to playing The Orange Box but I’ll likely check out HL 3 when it’s out and finally see what the series is all about.

I thought they were bringing out episode 3 first, or is this episode 3?

You have to remember Half Life 2 is nearly 4 years old now, in it’s day it was and still is IMO a ground breaking game of design and innovation.

I’m just playing through the orange box now, yeah the graphics are a bit dated, and it’s still a corridor shooter. But gameplay wise this game is still head and shoulders above the rest, plot, pacing and overall presentation is really unmatched. The thing with the hal life series was never about the graphics it was always about the story and player involvement, I remember playing Hal Life on the PS2 (not the best conversion) and it had so many outstanding set moments, the helicopter battle on the dam, creeping around the rocket silo, meet the military for the first time, each and every moment shows that with a good story and some excellent characters video games could hold their own in a grown up world.

I also credit the Half Life series as moving the FPS along in the right direction, John Carmack (of id software) once said ‘The plot in a video game is like the plot in a porn film. It can be in there, but nobody cares and it’s not really important.’ Half Life changed that, and in doing so changed the way developers made FPS games.

Ok rant over Half Life 3 2010 bring it on baby yeah.

    @ Mclovin

I think HL 2: Episode 3 will be out before this.

    @ Squiffy

I didn’t discredit the Half Life series, I just said I thought the 4 year old graphics looked dated and since I haven’t played The Orange Box yet it’s very likely that I won’t get around to it with all the shooters on the way. ;)

    @guys smoking rocks

Half Life 2 is still very relevant. I have yet to play a game whose facial animations have a better real-time quality than that of HL2’s. Level design and story are great and still some of the best use of ragdoll physics to date, if not THE best.

Needless to say, HL3 should be a stellar game.

When did anyone say it was irrelevant?

I haven’t played it. So should I jump on the band wagon and start talking it up when I’ve never tried it? No. I said I haven’t played it but will likely try HL 3.
