I Am Not Impressed

Not long ago, I wrote a guest review of Battlefield: Bad Company for AbleGamers.com. This article received an interesting comment from someone who stumbled on their site, and I thought that I would share it with all of you. We’ve all been on the receiving end of this kind of ignorance before, both from other gamers that don’t understand our control needs, and from a few software companies as well.

Here is the comment, for your enjoyment:

“wow

What are you talking about? This game is WAY better than COD4. That game doesnt even have vehicles!!! You whine because the game doesnt have the right controls???? That is the lamest excuse EVER! The music and sounds are amazing. Ever since Ive been playing games I NEVER change the controls, learn to use them and if u cant adapt u dont deserve to play it anyway.”

First off, let me be clear that I’m not irked about him disagreeing with some of my opinions. People don’t always see eye to eye on these sorts of things, and that’s fine.

What I am annoyed at (besides his inability to use apostrophes and excessive use of capitols & question marks) is the remark about our need for alternative and customizable controls. That, and the fact that I wrote this review to lend a hand to the nice folks over at AbleGamers in an effort to unite our two communities that share similar goals & perspectives. In that light, the remarks made by this individual are both ridiculous and uncalled for. And they quite frankly pissed me off.

Here is my response:

“One of the goals at this site is about gaming accessibility and controls are a key part of that. If you are so insensitive to the site goals, I’m not sure why you would read this review. You show great disrespect to the people here and your intolerance to the needs of other gamers make you appear silly and childish. Saying “I don’t deserve to play” because my preferences are different than yours only demonstrates immaturity and makes any points that you attempted to convey irrelevant. The issue is not that you disagree with me, but rather your juvenile and prejudiced perspective.”

I think my reply speaks for itself, because according to this buffoon, we don’t deserve to play games. What we have here is a case of a random jackass who came across the AbleGamers site and decided to make a few smart remarks to garner some attention and then go on his merry way feeling proud of himself.

Well, congratulations, because whoever you are, you wanted some attention and you’ve got it. Your idiocy is now archived here forever.

Another thing I’d like to point out before I close this off and return to my normal jovial self is the fact that my article on AbleGamers clearly states what website I represent. I find it interesting that he chose to comment on AbleGamers instead of my site where it would be available for my immediate review and response.

I’m not sure if my remarks will be read by the individual or not, but in case they are, feel free to post here instead or get in touch with me directly the next time you want to take a shot at my community and the members that come here.

Anyway, happy gaming to our members, visitors and friends at AbleGamers who support this website!! To those of you who don’t and think that alt-control players do not deserve any respect, please feel free to make use of your browser’s “back” button.

    That’s true…

Doesn’t excuse their intolerant viewpoints though. I think default controls are horrid but I don’t go around telling people who use them that they don’t deserve to play. I guess I heard this one too many times and needed to rant :)

That’s insane. I’ve never actually brought up the alt-controls thing in any forum simply because I expect nothing but a unanimous “huh?”, but I can’t stop thinking about how ignorant that clown’s statement was. If you’re able to configure where your ‘reload’ button is located in every single shooter then shouldn’t it make sense to be able to modify your sticks? I just want to thank the staff here for what they’ve put together because I didn’t know such a community existed till a few months ago. Legacy or nothing.

Impressive how many people want to re-educate other people :-(

PS: Already 39 people have signed the “Customizable game controls at the firmware level for PS3″ petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/ps3alter/petition.html :-)

39? Not a bad start but we need more. Sign the petition please, people, it doesn’t take long. :)

I want to first thank you for your review. I also want to say that I am sorry that such a message came from our site. I am sure that this person is not a disabled gamer, because I can not imagine one of our folks making such a short- sided and down right dumb. We let people speak and we try not to squash free thought. In short, we let people show how smart, or how dumb they are.

Please do not let this random comment taint your view of AbleGamers, we are in support of AC and what you all do. We hope the future is bright for both sites.

No worries Mark, this was no fault of yours or your community members.

I also couldn’t imagine one of your members saying this comment either. It wouldn’t make any sense. However I felt that this comment was an insult to both your members, and mine, so I needed to address it.

Thanks for your support of this site and I look forward to contributing on AbleGamers more and helping in any way I can. :)

Fantastic responce. I would also like to mention that controls are a huuuge part of gaming. The ability to customize to your liking is big factor to me wether I would buy a game or not.
