KILLZONE 2 SCREEN SHOTS

Straight JacketMany of us like to bend the rules in our personal favor and as you may recall I did just that, two months ago….to the day in fact!

This time it’s the demo for Killzone 2 and my newly created European PSN account has allowed me to gather the screenshots you all know and love…or hate. As is always the case, when a demo is made available in such close proximity to the a retail release you can bet that controls shown represent the the entirety of the final game’s options.

In addition to the pictures below are the options to change X and Y axis sensitivity, and inversion of both X and Y axes. The later of the two I find both hilarious and frustrating. I mean C’mon, we can invert looking left and right but Legacy gets excluded. I know I should be the last person to question the inclusion of ANY control options but seriously, who the heck inverts the X axis?! I want to meet these people and learn how they came to use that option. I’m not judging here, just laughing myself into a straight-jacket.

The lack of any Legacy option is a sad situation as the duck and cover system is probably not friendly to those with a Legacy modded controller. The player must use the “move forward” to pop in and out of cover meaning you won’t be ableto look left and right simultaniously. Don’t take my word for it, check out the demo yourself which should be available in all regions before it’s release in late February.

The first four screen shots below are for a “Default” stick layout and the last two are Southpaw, sorry Legacy players. There is no button mapping available.

I really don’t understand why game developers take the time and effort to produce 4 or more button layouts rather than simply letting the gamer assign them. I mean, come on! Surely it would be simpler and less time consuming to make a single option to remap buttons rather than researching and designing 6 different ones.

I have recently messed with some beginner level object oriented programming and either way it’s probably very time consuming. Button mapping probably takes a bit longer to code but I would like to hear the statements of a professional programmer on this topic.

I won’t dispute that it’s likely time consuming… but they’re all getting paid well, and we’re all spending our money on their games. :)

I think for most devs, button assigning and customization is an afterthought, they’re just not concerned about it when they’re trying to build games that will sell on such a tight schedule.

What drives me bonkers though, is the inclusion of all kinds of button layouts, southpaw, x and y axis inversion, but NO LEGACY. I wonder if Legacy is a pain in the ass to include… might explain why it’s ignored so much.

I want to see the alternate 2 controller mapping WITH southpaw controls for this game (sorry, but zoom on L3 is just wrong whichever way you look at it!), and was kind of hoping for full button mapping to be included in the full game. Some what disappointed if not available…

    To SAKY first of all,
On a website dedicated to pushing the rights of gamers to alternative control options, nobody should say anything like, “who the heck inverts the X axis?”.
I do. Lots of folks do. It makes perfect sense to us. If your forced to use default and one stick controls all the “looking”, inverting BOTH axes is the same way you’d operate a gun turret in real life. A gun turret is 3rd person operation, in other words, there’s a pivot point your working with.
For example, if you wanna fire at a target in the sky, let’s say up and to the right, you grab the handles, and move your hands down and to the left in order to point the gun barrel. Simple.
I use different controls for different situations, it’s wacky, but whatever, it’s what I like.
These next gen system games should all have button assignments. I mean, I know the PS3 and Xbox 360 are no Super Nintendo’s, but you’d think somebody there could figure it out. Seriously.
Back to the original point, every possible situation should be backed on this site, not degraded, c’mon man.

    @ Blake,

Thank you for your insight on X Axis inversion. Of course if that’s what you’re comfortable with, you should be able to use it.

I think SAKY’s remarks were meant to be a light hearted “jab” at the devs for including every imaginable option short of button mapping… while still forgetting about Legacy.

It was more a defense of Legacy controls, I think, rather than an attack on X Axis inversion, or folks who use it. I know SAKY very well, and I really can’t think of anyone who is more dedicated to the importance of accessible and customizable controls than him.

As I’m sure he’ll attest, I don’t think he meant to slight your control preference. Folks like you are why he dedicates so much time to this website. Thanks for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. :)

    @Blake

Please drop me an E-mail, I’d love to ask you a few questions, we’ve never had anyone bring up this options and to my knowledge it is the most rare of options. Saky{at}alt-controls{dot}com

I know it’s an old thread but I just saw this in a search.

I invert X and Y. I can’t play FPS OR 3rd person games without doing it. That is of course something of an over-statement, I can play them, it’s just that it becomes very very unpleasant and no fun at all. I keep running around turning the wrong way and shooting into he ground or air or having to think about everything I do which means I die a lot.

I think the first game I played a lot did it this way by default, so it’s stuck ever since; I wasn’t ‘inverting’ it back then, but over time the ’standard’ changed. And if you think i’m over-stating the problem, just try inverting to opposite of whatever you’re used to on any game that lets you and see how much fun it is.

And now it seems that most new games are dropping the invert X option. I guess i’ll just save my money, since I can find many much cheaper ways to get equally frustrated. And games just don’t mean that much to me if they’re not fun.

Personally I myself agree with Blake and Michael. I have a lot of problems playing FPS games on consoles withough being able to invert both Y and X axis controls. It isn’t something that I think about when I play, it just ends up that when I want to turn my char to look a particular direction it is entirely opposite of what the standard is. Becuase of that, there a lot of games that I won’t play on consoles. I would love to be able to play them, but the controls drive me so dang nuts that I just can’t stand to play them for more then 5 minutes.
