Legendary Delivers For Controls

This game, which was developed by Spark Unlimited (of Turning Point infamy) was released a couple weeks ago, but we put it on the back burner in favor of making sure that the highly anticipated games were covered.

It seems that the majority of you just weren’t interested in this one, because normally if we haven’t posted on a game within a day or two of its release, we get emails asking “why haven’t you posted on this game yet?! What are the controls?!”
Not that we mind of course… but no one has asked about this game and it’s been out for weeks. I guess that says something.
Anyway, I decided to check this one out to see what it had to offer for controls, and much to my surprise, all four stick layouts are available (Default, Southpaw, Legacy and Legacy-Southpaw) plus two additional button presets for the Default setting (which are of little relevance for us).
I haven’t played this one much yet, though I’ll say that the opening sequence was interesting. As I mentioned in an earlier preview, you play as a fellow that’s opened Pandora’s Box, which in turn has unleashed a whole brigade of nasty demons on the world. Also in doing so, you obtain some BioShock-like powers that allow you to blast energy from your hand and heal yourself.
Visually, it looks pretty nice thanks to the Unreal Engine. The environments have a polished, yet gritty appearance to them.
So basically, we’re looking at a game here that has a cool opening sequence and some nice graphics, but overall it’s really going to have a hard time stacking up against the other games that are out now. If you’re curious about this one, or when you finally run out of new games to play, maybe give it a whirl.

November 25th, 2008 at 11:23 amThe moral of the story: If nobody cares about a game then then it will deliver what we want in the control options.
From now on, everyone should stop caring.

November 26th, 2008 at 4:05 amI didn’t think much of Quake IV, and it offered all 4 stick layouts and completely customisable buttons.

Agreed. We better tread lightly on that one though… Quake is one of McLovin’s favorites and we don’t want to fire up the Aussie too much…

November 27th, 2008 at 12:49 amNah, he’s right quake 4 was the worst one yet, I really didnt like it at all. Q3A on the other hand is still the biggest jump in graphical advancements I have ever seen in my life!

November 30th, 2008 at 8:24 pmLegendary’s release didn’t catch my notice. I had seen videos previewing the game with the designers speaking about the various perks the game had to offer. It seemed interesting enough.
I hope a demo is released.

January 23rd, 2009 at 2:36 pmI just wanted to say that despite the offerings in controls, the legendary demo southpaw controls also changed the button mapping and I couldn’t handle it. Trying to shoot a gun with the left trigger was just really throwing me off. It’s nice to see the offering, but developers, please do it right.

You raise a good point and sorry to hear you found firing uncomfortable when mapped to the left trigger.
Some southpaw players prefer this option - so really, the ideal solution is to allow players to select which side they would like to use for firing (Gears of War offers this for example).
Your situation really highlights how important (and useful!) full customization would be.
