MGO beta: Metal Gear (alt-controls) Omitted

hes-pissed-because-there-are-no-alt-controls.jpg

Well, after downloading the Metal Gear Online beta, waiting for the 1.01 update download, then the 1.02 update download, and registering a “Konami ID” and “Game ID” (separate from your PSN ID), I’ve come to find that no Southpaw or Legacy options are offered.

As a Southpaw user, I can get by during general third-person movement, but the first-person and over-the-shoulder views get awkward. There are options to “invert” the X-axis (horizontal) on the right camera stick, so maybe that will help some folks (not me). Inverting X/Y for the three camera modes are the only customizable control options; there’s only one button config available. While the single-player MGS4 may have some variations in weapon/item selection, I’ll assume the move/look options will be the same as those provided for use in MGO.

It is only the beta version, so maybe more options will be provided in the final release, but I won’t hold my breath.

I suspected this would be the case. Sorry MGS fans…

I wish I had played the other MGS games. Had I known that this was going to be an issue I would have pushed this title a lot more. :(

Too sad, was hoping that at least MGS 4 would have southpaw controls :-(
Would have been a reason for me to buy a PS3, but now I am not so sure as all the interesting games seem to be characterized by the lack of southpaw controls :-(
Lucky I have a Wii where I don’t have to ask this question for any game I would like to purchase.

I can’t believe how narrow minded these game developers are! they will lose money by not including left handed options as i for one wont buy games i can’t control. It spoils the fun having to concentrate fully on a right handed setup and makes playing online a no go.

How much effort does it take to program extra control options ? 10 minutes ? 5 ??

Has anyone worked out how much revenue they could be losing, if not they should then wave the figures at them and watch the southpaw options flood in.

Good question about how long it would take to program in additional control options. I can’t imagine it would be that difficult for game developers….

I know this is an MGS thread but i made a complaint to Bathesdas’s customer care today. Will let you know if they respond.

    Hello,
I was inteneding to buy your produt “elder scrolls oblivion” for ps3 until i realised it was yet another game with prejudice for left handed people like myself. No left hand control options are available and it is “COSTING YOU MONEY” as many people will not buy game they cannot control.

Dedicated websites have been set up because of this problem, are you not aware of this ?

    http://www.alt-controls.com

How much programming effort does it take to include a few control options ?
As a profit making organisation you have shot yourself in the foot, by how much in monetary terms i am not sure but i’m guessing if a survey was taken your shareholders wouldn’t be happy.

I am very disapointed and shall not bother looking at your products in the future until more effort is made to accommodate both left and right control options.

Wow. Phil, remind us not to get on your bad side…. ;)

But all valid points and I’d love to know if they respond. Thing is, I’m not sure how aware developers are of the importance of alternative and customizable controls. There are numerous members here that post on forums and contact the developers so each time something like this is done, we make our presence known, which is good.

Thanks for the effort, Phil. :)

Just glad to know i’m not alone :) ive been using a PC for so long i had no idea that the console market still had this problem, until i bought my ps3 and found myself running around in most games looking at the floor.

I’m seriously thinking of buying one of these now! £60 is a bit much but a keyboard and mouse sounds mighty tempting at this point.

Great sirte btw, the list for southpaw games is coming in very helpful.

Yea, just got MGS4 and I’m pissed there’s no legacy controls, having much trouble : (

Why oh why did I have to be one of the now few people who played Doom, and Goldeneye on consoles?????
I wish I had started with Halo, the same way everyone has done now.

Goldeneye in particular has forced me to be Legacy for Life.
