Resident Evil 5 Demo is up on XBL *UPDATED
*UPDATE: We have added screen shots and impressions of the control options at the end of this article.
In Japan only. Sorry to burst your collective bubbles folks but look on the bright side, someone isn’t reading this post and is currently rushing to their XBOX to be disappointed, and it’s not you.
This is a request to any member that has a Gold account for XBL-Japan. We would really love hear from you about this title so please drop me an E-mail if you can help.
Yeah, I play a mean trick and then ask for help, sue me. For the the rest of us I have heard that this demo will arrive to other regions in January, stay tuned.
I think that game will be accessable to us, the controls just don’t feel like those of a shooter, they are very cumbersome in comparison. Also, the game has a very slow pace. Enemies are slow to attack, often standing on front of you for 10 seconds with no action. FYI, just my point of view.
The controls are a bit unusual, which has always been the case for Resident Evil games. I have summorized how each option effects the analog sticks’ functions. Now before you get all up in arms about this, try understand that this game doesn’t play much like a 1st/3rd person shooter. I am simply trying to give you folks all the information I can. Honestly I don’t see my self using a controller mod for this one. Type D controls are the closest representation of the pure FPS default style and to me it was awkward to use with my souhtpaw modded controller. But all of this is my point of view.
These control layouts are most likely going to be final options in the retail game so you should all expect this to be Alt-Cotnrol’s official coverage of RE5’s controls. Of ourse we will post again for discussion once everyone has had a shot at the game’s controls.
- Type A - AKA Resident Evil 4 style
Left Stick = Legacy Movement (move forward/back, turn left/right)
Right Stick = Camera
Manual Aiming = Southpaw (left stick)
- Type B
Left Stick = Legacy Movement
Right Stick = Camera
Manual Aiming = Default (right stick)
- Type C
Left Stick = Default (move forward/back, left/right)
Right Stick = Camera
Manual Aiming = Southpaw
- Type D
Left Stick = Default (move forward/back, left/right)
Right Stick = Camera
Manual Aiming = Default

December 5th, 2008 at 8:00 amI have managed to create an a XBL account for Japan and I am currently downloading it. It may take a while to figure out the Japanese menus and thus the control options. Wish me luck.

December 5th, 2008 at 10:28 amI think for Legacy players, Type A would be fairly comfortable.
Type D with a mod might be good as well.

December 6th, 2008 at 10:19 amPlayed RE4 on the gamecube, so type A controls will be fine. Hope the demo comes soon to Europe, so I can give it a try.

December 7th, 2008 at 7:34 pmWell I have managed to download the RE5 demo to a disc today from PC and transfer it to my (un-modded) 360. All you have to do is put the burnt DVD in your xbox drive and you are all set. This game is AWESOME!! I followed a YouTube video for each step and it literally took me 20 minutes to be playing the game. I highly recommend doing the research to get the demo. There are 2 levels and probably 30 minutes of total game time included. I’ve spent a lot of time with the different control styles as well. Honestly, my only gripe about the selection is the following:
Type D shooting is: hold the left trigger to draw your gun, and pulling the right trigger to fire. (like COD4)
All 3 other types are: hold the right trigger to draw your gun and hit X to fire. (like RE4)I really wish that we could choose between these two firing options within each control type.
I personally would use the “Legacy movement” as SAKY put it, along with left and right trigger combo to shoot (much like COD4).Honestly though, this is a small gripe, as the alternative is still very good and feels just like RE4. With the four control options to choose from, I think almost everyone here will find a combination that fits their control preference. 2 types use the left stick for aiming, and the other 2 use the right stick. A nice balance.
I also noticed that they took a page from Gears of War and when using the “Default” left stick options, while holding down A to run/turn the left stick is automatically switched over to Legacy style turning so the player can hold down A and turn with the left stick simultaneously. Once A is released, the left stick goes right back to default.
Again, the demo is really, really good. It’s definitely worth burning a disc and 20 to 30 minutes of work. It’s all fairly easy.

December 9th, 2008 at 5:07 pmYou better believe I wanted that demo! Plus you can online co-op. My most anticipated game since Halo3 for sure. Can’t wait until March even more now.

Word around the net is that the Co-Op servers have been set to lock out XBL subscribers that do not reside in Japan. I haven’t tried to play Co-op recently so I can’t confirm this but I imagine it’s completly true. I hope it was fun while it lasted.
