Resident Evil 5 Trailer

re5.jpgAs many of you are aware, GT TV aired the world premiere of the trailer for the highly anticipated Resident Evil 5 yesterday evening.

Now I was a fan of the series years ago during the N64 and Playstation days. Resident Evil 2 was a staple in my N64 collection, but since then, I actually haven’t touched an RE game.

Although my RE skills will need some refining, I have to say that I’m fairly excited about the new installment that’s on the way. From what I saw of Resident Evil 4, the series has come a long way. It appears as though the fifth entry looks to expand upon the evolution and reinvention of the series that was started with RE 4.

The visuals shown in the trailer look pretty sharp and the game should be a non-stop thrill ride from start to finish. You can check out the video after the click.

Impressive, no?

I would have preferred to see a bit more game play footage, but what was shown looks promising. As usual though, I can’t help but wonder about what this game is going to be like as far as controls are concerned.

Anyone who has played RE 4 on the PS2 or Gamecube (no, the Wii version doesn’t count), please feel free to let us know your thoughts on the control system. And while we’re at it, the rest of you can let us know your thoughts of the video in general. :)

Don’t quote me on the controls, I never played the GC or PS2 versions of RE4. Wii version is surely the same as PS2 and GC versions where you have to stop moving to shoot, then hold down the targeting button, and then aim….fire.  I think the difference between Wii and PS2/GC version was the IR pointer on the Wiimote was used for aiming as opposed to using an analog, you can bet your sweet ass that the right analog was probably used in the PS2/GC version and that RE5 will be the same. If I can get used to using my southpaw mod on GTA4 then I can probably get used to it here but I would hope we can get some control options from Capcom. BTW Capcom, thanks for southpaw aiming in Dead Rising, love the game, love the controls, love the smack in the face to the asshole righties telling me to “get used to it” when talking about default controls.

RE as a series has changed if only for the simple fact that it’s needed in order to progress a series that derives pleasure from an interest in the story.  How many iterations can you play through with the same virus and the same zombies. I don’t much care for zombies getting replaced by the “Las Plagas” but again, a change was needed to keep the series from becoming stagnant and the changes work well in the RE games.  Gameplay has changed also but again it’s for the best, even if the control system is completely unorthodox and clumsy.  At the same time that clumsy control system helps to keep the player from being too strong and enhances the sense of urgency to repel an infected/zombie attack.
