Alternative Controls Supported:
-Southpaw
I’ll start this post off by getting to the point because rest is all my opinions of the game and the journey of getting to play this beta. Sad to say but the options in this title are the same as those found in the original Resistance:FOM. Southpaw is supported, but no Legacy. Players still have the option the change the buttons layout in any way they see fit. You can actually retain 4 custom layouts across campaign and mulitiplayer modes which is great if you have friends over and prefer a different layout than one they use (see: all of you that have friends). Close but no cigar, I guess nobody hounded Insomniac over the past months. If you did bother them, then why didn’t we know about it?! As it’s the norm around here, pictures of the control options screen can be found at the end of the article.
I awoke this morning to find yet another beta test key in my E-mail but rather than the previous four that were all for COD:WaW this was for Insomniac’s Resistance 2. With my eyes barely open I stumbled over the PS3, switched it on, entered my code, and then waited for a giant 2.2GB download to complete.
An hour later I returned and fired up the game… and found it needed a 16MB patch. A minute later I fired up the game and checked out the control options (priorities first). After looking over the control options I tried to start up a match and had some issues with the less than intuitive interface. So then my A.D.D. kicked in and I got it in my head to try out my Bluetooth headset with he PS3. Another twenty minutes pass before I find success and proceed to fire the game back up. Back to the alien game interface, sitting in a lobby waiting for the game to start. I managed to pick up my first PSN friend who also had no clue how to get into a game and we stumbled through the menus for a thirty minutes before we figured everything out.
It’s so confusing to play a game you know nothing about but still I was having some great fun. I palled around with my random teammates, and new found friend, using the soldier class to attack one swarm of enemies after another. The numerous and large the Chimera units was quite impressive and joining up with eight other players was made for some great fun.
As of this writing I have only played the Co-Op mode so far and as I said It was quite fun. The need to focus on making a team effort is refreshing as this is achieved with the three available character classes. The medic uses energy drained from enemy units (via a gun) to heal their teammates with a resulting energy blast. Soldiers lay down the big guns and provide protection for others using a standard issue energy shield. The Special Ops supply everyone with ammunition while dispensing covering fire. Each role is important because only these are the only ways the regain health an ammo in this mode and it’s a great way to get groups of players to work together and rely on one another. It’s so simple it’s brilliant.
My only issue with this mode is that in lieu of scripting a bunch of enemies to attack in waves, thus varying and lengthening the battles, the designers opted to give some enemies a staggering amount of energy resulting in times where your entire team is unloading ammo into a single enemy for 5 minutes or more. These points in the game get pretty boring and happens a bit to often so I can’t imagine many people playing this mode for extended periods of time.
Judging from the Co-Op mode and the few hours I spent playing this game I would say that Insomniac still has a pretty solid title here and it’s another fun game for your PS3.
- Time played: 3 hrs
- Mode: Co-Op
- Classes used: 3
- Level reached: 3

October 24th, 2008 at 3:54 pmGreat, at least they did leave the option of custom button mapping
I do often find it not so useful to have the jump button on the right side in southpaw mode. -

October 27th, 2008 at 11:04 pmWell, has anyone successfully modded a PS3 controller? I may have to take the plunge and ebay up a modded controller so I can play this and Killzone 2. (Neither of which I have much faith in a Legacy option happening…)

October 31st, 2008 at 4:44 pmI actually did email Insomniac back in January, apparently to no avail:
To whom it may concern:
I am humbly requesting that you offer alternate control stick configurations for your next PS3 game, Resistance 2. After years of playing FPS’s with ‘legacy’ control in games like Goldeneye, Halo 1-3, Call of Duty 2 & 4, and the Rainbow Six series, I unfortunately was not able to adapt to the mandatory default control of Resistance FoM. While I bought the game and tried, I just couldn’t do it.
I am really looking forward to Resistance 2, and hope that you put in a few alternate stick configurations for people like myself.
Thank you for your time,
-

Good email… don’t get discouraged that Resistance 2 doesn’t support Legacy though… it takes many emails, and many forum posts from numerous people to get the point across to developers.
