Being a Southpaw player I thought this game would be out of bounds, having a default only setting. But with no need to aim with one of the thumb sticks and all movement on one stick, plus lock-on fixed to one of the bumper buttons, this game plays like a dream. I had no problems whatsoever, so on to the review.
Devil May Cry 4 on the Xbox 360, when I heard this news I jumped for joy. Being a DMC fan since the original on the PS2 I must admit playing again but on my 360 felt fantastic. Once again the human world is in danger from the demon underworld and only one man can stop them: Dante.
The strangest thing about Devil May Cry 4 is that for the main part of the game you don’t play as Dante but as Nero. The new Hero, Nero is a strange choice and I had real misgivings at first, as I remember playing MGS 2 and we all know how Raiden destroyed that game. Well no worries here Nero is a fine addition, and in some ways plays better than Dante. Now before DMC fanboys go mental that’s my personal opinion.
For the first 11 levels you play as Nero with his Demonic arm, ‘The Devil Bringer.’ With this arm you can grab demons from afar and drag them towards you to keep your combo running high. As you move through the levels you increase your powers, but you never become too powerful that you over come enemies with ease. After level 11 the game takes a switch and hands you control of Dante and DMC fans will be happy to know that Dante is just as good as you remember.
The only problem with this it that from the moment you take control of Dante you replay all of the levels you played as Nero but only in reverse. And to be honest this feels like a bit of a let down, same levels same bosses with only a few new enemies. That’s not the only problem the graphics while good, don’t come up to next-gen scratch, it reminds me of an original Xbox game. Capcom’s other games DEAD RISING and LOST PLANET really show what this developer can do. With the like of Ninja Gaiden 2 coming up, and if you can only get one of these games personally I’d wait.
That’s not saying don’t buy DMC 4; it is a good game with a great story, but unless you like going for high scores and are quite happy to replay levels to get perfection every time once is enough. So all in all It’s a very good game, not a great game but a very good game worth getting. I’m going to give it a 4/5.

April 19th, 2008 at 9:07 amI personally have never played any of the DMC games… I might give this one a shot as there aren’t many new titles to play at the moment. I think I’ll be ok without having Legacy as well based on the way you described functionalities of the control system.
